A Season to Be Proud Of: The 2024 Abbey Golf Team’s Journey to the County Final

The 2024 season was a memorable one for the Abbey Golf Team, as we reached the county final in the Worcestershire Handicap League—proving that we can compete with the best clubs in the county.

With 230 members, Abbey represents just 46.1% of the average membership size for golf clubs in the UK. While we draw from a smaller player base, the team’s performances throughout the season showed just how competitive and determined our players are.

Season Highlights

Winning the Group Stage: The Abbey topped its qualifying group with a series of strong performances.
Quarterfinal Victory: Against Cleobury, the team played three matches at home and three away, securing a decisive win.
Semifinal Triumph: The Abbey faced Churchill and Blakedown, winning all three away games and two-and-a-half at home to advance to the final.

A Strong Team Effort

Throughout the season, 21 players represented Abbey, with teams of six made up of a low-handicap player (4–11.9) and a high-handicap player (12–22). This format allowed players of different skill levels to contribute to the team’s success and helped build a cohesive and competitive squad.

Making It to the Final

Making it all the way to the county final was a testament to the team’s hard work and determination. The final, held at Great Barr Golf Club, would prove to be a closely fought contest against strong opponents from Gaudet Luce.

Final Match Report

The final at Great Barr Golf Club was a hard-fought contest in challenging conditions:

Gaudet Luce started strong, winning the first game on the final hole.
Abbey responded with a 5&3 victory in the second game, leveling the score at 1-1.
The match remained close, but Gaudet Luce edged ahead in the third and fourth games, eventually securing a 4-2 victory despite a dominant 7&6 win by Abbey’s Mark Goddard and Dave Stocks in the penultimate game.

While the final marked Abbey’s only defeat of the season, it was a closely contested match that highlighted our ability to compete at the highest level.
